This policy explains how we write and maintain HowToBuyCarbonCredits. It applies to every guide, explainer, tool and data table on the site.

Our principles

  • Answer first. Each page answers its main question in the first few sentences, then gives the detail.
  • Reduce first, then offset. We never suggest that buying credits replaces cutting your own emissions.
  • Precise claims. We don’t promise that buying credits makes you or your products climate-friendly. We explain what each kind of claim requires instead.
  • Specifics over generic tips. Numbers come with units, dates and a source.

How we source facts

  • Every statistic, price, date, provider detail and rule on a page has a source in that page’s Sources list, with the date we accessed it.
  • We use primary sources wherever they exist: standards bodies and registries (such as Verra, Gold Standard and the ICVCM), governments and regulators, scientific bodies such as the IPCC, and the providers’ own pages for provider details.
  • Where we can’t find a primary source for a fact, we leave the fact out.
  • Worked examples and illustrations are labelled as examples.

How often we review pages

Each page shows the date it was last reviewed.

Page type Review cadence
Prices, claims rules and regulation Monthly
Guides, explainers and other pages Quarterly

We also update a page sooner when a source changes, a rule takes effect or a reader reports a problem.

How we compare providers

Our provider comparison uses the same columns for every provider, and each value comes from the provider’s own pages: type, who it serves, minimum purchase, whether buyers get registry serial numbers, whether its certificate shows the retirement, whether it sells CCP-labelled credits, regions, and the date we last checked.

  • A value is “Unknown” when the provider’s pages don’t say. It isn’t a judgement.
  • Providers are listed alphabetically, not ranked.
  • No provider pays to be listed or to change its position.

Editorial and commercial work

The company that runs this site, Agochar Tech LLP, also runs BuyCarbonOffsets.org, an offset shop and reseller. To keep that from shaping our content:

  • BuyCarbonOffsets.org appears in comparisons on the same criteria as other providers, marked “Our shop”.
  • Every page links to our disclosure from its footer.
  • Pages about investing in carbon credits carry no links to it.
  • Advertisers have no say over our content.

Read our disclosure for how we make money.

How we use AI tools

Pages on this site are researched and drafted with AI assistance. Every fact is checked against the primary source cited on the page before it’s published, and pages follow the review cadence above. Once named reviewers join the team, each page will also show who reviewed it.

Authors and reviewers

Pages are written by our editorial team. We don’t list individual authors or credentials until we can name real people with real experience.

Corrections

If you spot an error, tell us through the contact form and choose the topic Corrections. Include the page and, if you can, the source that shows the right information. We check every report against the sources. When a correction changes a fact on a page, we update the page and its review date.
